Die Casting Quality Standards -ISO 9001, IATF 16949, and PPAP Explained
Quality system requirements when selecting a die casting supplier generate frequent confusion. This guide explains the major quality standards, what each actually requires, and what to ask your supplier.
ISO 9001:2015 -The Foundation
ISO 9001:2015 is the international quality management system standard. Certification means an independent auditor has verified the organization: has documented procedures for all quality-affecting activities, monitors and measures process performance, investigates nonconformances with corrective action, and continuously improves.
What ISO 9001 does NOT require: Specific technical standards for die casting parameters, specific equipment, or specific inspection frequencies. It is a management system standard, not a technical product standard.
ISO 9001 is the minimum credible quality certification. KastMfg holds ISO 9001:2015 certification.
IATF 16949:2016 -Automotive Quality
IATF 16949 builds on ISO 9001 and adds automotive-specific requirements, primarily the five core quality tools:
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
| APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) | Structured program development with defined milestones |
| PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) | Systematic risk identification for each process step |
| Control Plans | All process controls and inspection activities documented |
| MSA (Measurement System Analysis / Gage R&R) | Measurement equipment and methods verified capable |
| SPC (Statistical Process Control) | Process stability and capability monitored in production |
Additionally, each OEM publishes Customer-Specific Requirements (CSRs) that layer additional obligations on the standard.
For any automotive program, require IATF 16949 compliance from your die casting supplier.
PPAP -Production Part Approval Process
PPAP is the formal gate between development and production. The supplier must demonstrate the production process can consistently produce conforming parts before first production delivery.
PPAP Levels
| Level | What is submitted | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Part Submission Warrant (PSW) only | Low-risk commodity parts |
| 2 | PSW + limited data | Moderate-risk standard parts |
| 3 | PSW + complete package | Standard for new automotive programs |
| 4 | Customer-defined | Customer-specified requirements |
| 5 | Complete package reviewed at supplier | Safety-critical new technology |
Level 3 PPAP Elements
Design documentation · PFMEA · Process flow diagram · Control plan · MSA/Gage R&R studies · Dimensional results (100-piece layout) · Material certificates · Initial process capability (Cpk >=1.67 on critical characteristics) · Sample production parts · Part Submission Warrant (PSW)
KastMfg supports PPAP Levels 1-.
APQP -Advanced Product Quality Planning
APQP defines five phases with required outputs:
| Phase | Key Activities | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 -Plan | Customer requirements, feasibility | Design goals |
| 2 -Product Design | DFMEA, DFM review | DFMEA, prototype parts |
| 3 -Process Design | PFMEA, control plan | PFMEA, process instructions |
| 4 -Validation | Production trial, MSA, Cpk | PPAP package |
| 5 -Launch | SPC monitoring, CAPA | Controlled production |
SPC in Die Casting -What KastMfg Monitors
Process parameters every shot: Injection velocity, peak pressure, intensification pressure, die temperature, cycle time -logged, charted, alarm-controlled.
Dimensional characteristics: Critical drawing dimensions at defined intervals. X-bar R or I-MR charts maintained throughout production runs. Out-of-control signals trigger immediate hold and investigation.
What to Ask Your Die Casting Supplier
- Are you ISO 9001:2015 certified? By which body? (Request the certificate number -verify it.)
- Are you IATF 16949 compliant or certified?
- Can you show a sample PPAP package from an existing program?
- What process parameters do you control and log in production?
- What is your CAPA response time when a customer reports a quality problem?
- Can you provide material traceability to a specific melt batch within 24 hours?
