Agricultural machinery operates in the most corrosive and mechanically demanding outdoor environments in manufacturing: seasonal temperature extremes, continuous exposure to water, fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, vibration and shock from rough terrain, and maintenance intervals measured in seasons.
Agricultural Environment Requirements
Chemical resistance: Fertilizers (ammonium nitrate, urea, potassium chloride) and crop protection chemicals are aggressive electrolytes that accelerate aluminum corrosion. KastMfg specifies A360 (lower copper, better corrosion resistance than A380) for die castings in chemical contact, combined with e-coat plus powder coat for maximum barrier protection.
Vibration and fatigue: Continuous vibration at engine and terrain frequencies subjects castings to tens of millions of fatigue cycles over a tractor's service life. KastMfg evaluates rib layout, fillet radii, and wall thickness during DFM review specifically for vibration-loaded agricultural applications.
Repairability: Unlike automotive components, agricultural equipment is serviced in field workshops with limited tooling. Castings must tolerate weld repair (A360 for weldability) and re-machining of worn bearing surfaces.
IP protection: Hydraulic and electronic components require IP65/IP67 for field washing. KastMfg machines O-ring grooves and sealing faces to drawing tolerance with CMM verification and pressure test on first articles.
