Lock base components for window and door hardware are produced at KastMfg in Zamak 5 zinc alloy using hot-chamber high-pressure die casting. Zamak 5's 1% copper addition over Zamak 3 provides the higher tensile strength (331 MPa) and hardness (91 HRB) required for load-bearing lock body applications, while maintaining the smooth as-cast surface finish (Ra 0.8-1.6 μm) essential for decorative electroplating.
Hot-chamber die casting of Zamak 5 achieves CT4-CT6 dimensional tolerances as standard, typically eliminating the need for post-cast machining of functional features. Die life on zinc hot-chamber tools routinely exceeds 500,000 shots, making this process highly economical for high-volume hardware production.
