Brass die casting exists, but it is a niche process. Brass melts at 900-940°C - too hot for hot-chamber machines and punishing on dies - so most "brass" hardware you see (valves, fittings, lock parts) is actually forged, machined, or sand cast, not die cast. Meanwhile, a large share of parts buyers specify in brass can be die cast in zinc (Zamak) faster, cheaper, and with a better finish.

This guide explains where genuine brass die casting still makes sense, and when zinc is the practical substitute.


Why Brass Is Rarely Die Cast

The result: brass die casting carries high tooling cost per part and is only economical for parts that genuinely need brass's specific properties.

Where Brass Still Wins

  • Plumbing and fluid-handling parts - dezincification-resistant brass (DZR) handles potable water contact where zinc alloys cannot
  • Marine and corrosion-critical fittings - brass resists saltwater without coating
  • Electrical conductivity requirements - brass conducts roughly 2x better than Zamak
  • Regulatory specifications - some codes and legacy drawings mandate brass

If your part falls in these categories, genuine brass (die cast, forged, or machined from bar) is the right call.

Where Zinc (Zamak) Replaces Brass

For decorative, mechanical, and structural hardware, Zamak matches or beats brass on the properties that matter:

Typical conversions: lock bodies and cylinders, furniture and cabinet hardware, handles and knobs, zippers and buckles, decorative automotive trim, plumbing trim (non-wetted). Many of these were "brass" by tradition, not by requirement.


The Buyer's Decision Rule

  1. Does the part touch potable water or seawater? Specify brass (DZR) - zinc is not suitable.
  2. Is electrical conductivity a functional requirement? Brass.
  3. Is it a legacy drawing specifying brass by habit? Evaluate Zamak - expect 2-4x unit cost reduction at volume, with better plating finish.
  4. Is impact strength or elevated temperature the driver? Compare Zamak against brass on data - and consider whether ZA-8 or ZA-27 close the gap.

FAQ

Can brass be die cast?

Yes - by the cold-chamber process, typically with alloys like C85800. But high melting temperature makes it slow and hard on tooling, so it is reserved for parts that genuinely require brass properties.

Is Zamak as strong as brass?

Close, but not equal. Zamak 5 reaches roughly 330 MPa tensile versus ~380 MPa for die cast brass. For most hardware applications the difference is not functionally significant; ZA-27 (up to ~420 MPa) actually exceeds brass.

Does zinc hardware look as good as brass after plating?

Better, in most cases. Zinc's as-cast surface is smoother and takes bright chrome, nickel, or PVD finishes with fewer polishing steps - which is why most "chrome" bathroom and furniture hardware is zinc, not brass.

What about lead-free requirements?

Certified Zamak ingot is lead-free by composition and meets RoHS/REACH. Brass alloys traditionally contain lead for machinability; lead-free brass exists but costs more and machines worse.
